History

SYMS stands for Subaru Yajima Motor Sports, it is part of the Yajima Industries group of Japan (www.syms.co.jp) , Yajima is producing metal parts for Subaru and other manufactures since 1951 and has a great relation with Fuji Heavy Industries (the owner of Subaru and STI).

The founder of SYMS has had a passion for motor sports as in his early years he drove himself and passed on his love for the sports to his sons. It has the main headquarters in Japan, in Ota near the Subaru factories, where SYMS has an excellent facility where we do our chassis preparation. There is also an engine dyno there with constant emperature/humidity/pressure, and even a rolling road wind tunnel on a 25% scale. SYMS has a shop in Ota, Gunma prefecture, Japan, where we sell our Syms products mainly aftermarket items for Subaru. Also SYMS Japan takes care of other specialist's projects, in 2006 they also made a drifting car for the well known Team Orange.

In the early 1990s SYMS has made for FHI/STI the Subaru Vivio for Safari Rally and then concentrated on circuit racing the following years.

In 2003 SYMS RALLY TEAM got the commission to run Toshi Arai in PWRC (Production World Rally Championship), they got a win in Rally Cyprus and Rally Corsica, and got second place in the final PWRC standing, making them runner-up in the PWRC Championship.

In 2004, SYMS RALLY TEAM entered Niall McShea in the PWRC and with good results on the tarmac events in Germany and Corsica, podium and points scoring places in the gravel events they became Production World Champions 2004.

To improve our rally activities we opened in 2005 Syms Europe, in Grobbendonk Belgium, who takes care of the rally rograms and parts sales in Europe, this has a 1000m2 workshop and offices.

In 2005 SYMS RALLY TEAM ran Omani driver Hamed Al Wahaibi and young Finn Aki Teiskonen, with again great success as for the first time since the group N (Production Car group N started in 1988) category a Subaru Impreza won the prestigious Neste Rally Finland 2005, which was always won by Mitsubishi's. Also Aki Teiskonen took victory in PWRC at Wales Rally GB.
For 2006 SYMS RALLY TEAM entered many times Polish Champion Leszek Kuzaj and again now more experienced Aki Teiskonen.

In 2007 SYMS RALLY TEAM entered Kristian Sohlberg and Spyros Pavlides in the PWRC, and Tanner Foust and Andrew Pinker in the American Rally Championship. The both won a few rounds of the Rally America and Pinker finished second and Foust 4th in the championship. One of the most important motorsport events in the US, the X-Games, was won by Tanner Foust with the SYMS RALLY TEAM car.
